Dad's Army Filming in Thetford 1971 Dad's Army Film Rumours Is a new Dad's Army film on the cards?
Rumours have been heard of plans for a new Dad’s Army film starring some of Hollywood’s best-known actors with talk of Golden Globe winner Toby Jones playing Captain Mainwaring and Bill Nighy playing Sergeant Arthur Wilson in the remake.

However, there has been no confirmation at this stage a film will definitely be made. There has been various speculation of a new Dad’s Army film in recent years but nothing has ever hit the silver screen.

If it were to be made, a film would be of great interest to people in Norfolk as many of the scenes were filmed in and around Thetford, which became the fictional Walmington-on-Sea in the television series.

Visit the Dad's Army Museum in Thetford to find out more about the original TV series and its filming in and around the Town.

Thetford Forest Thetford Forest Living Symphonies An exciting new way to experience Thetford Forest, through Living Symphonies, a sound walk exploring the forest’s "thriving activity of wildlife, plants and atmospheric conditions" created by composers James Bulley and Dan Jones, presented on-site, in Thetford Forest.
Listening to an open-air concert from a live orchestra in one of England's beautiful forests will always connect you with Mother Nature - but thanks to musical science our forests are now set to become the actual performers, conducted by the flora and fauna in a series of "live" sound installations.

Living Symphonies is the culmination of a two-year project by composers Daniel Jones and James Bulley that aims to reach "thousands of people who might never otherwise be involved in the arts" by turning four forests across England into natural orchestras.

Working with ecologists from the Forestry Commission, the artists have made a detailed ecological survey to record the behaviours of plants and animals living within a 600 sq m and 25m high section of woodland.

It will take the composers three days to install the complicated 3D-sound design into Thetford Forest in Norfolk - the first location in England to host Living Symphonies.

The performance will be heard through more than 20 speakers, hidden between ground level and 25m high in the forest canopy, linked by more than 2km of cables and powered by a silent bio-generator formerly used at the London Olympics.

Free Cakes For Kids Thetford Thetford charity supplies first birthday cake for deprived children A charity that provides birthday cakes for children who would not otherwise receive them has supplied its first customer.
The Free Cakes for Kids initiative, which is co-ordinated by Shauna Tate, 23, provides birthday cakes for children who would not normally get one for a variety of reasons, including deprivation and family issues.

Mrs Tate runs a baking club at the Beaters Hut on the Shadwell Estate and decided to start the charity after consulting with other members, deciding there would be plenty of volunteers willing to bake for the children.

Now the group has provided the first cake to a four-year-old boy from Thetford and is appealing for anyone who feels they may qualify for a cake to get in touch with them through the website

Mrs Tate said children could be referred to the charity by Home-Start UK or the Benjamin Foundation, or they could self-refer.

She added they would be asked a series of questions to gauge their level of need and provided they met the criteria they would receive a cake.

Mrs Tate, who has two children, Loli, three and Fox, nine months, said: “As a mother of two children, I find it really sad that some children do not get birthday cakes, so it is nice that if a family has split they can come together because they have got a birthday.”

Nationally, there are 84 groups that bake cakes for children and Mrs Tate, who lives with her husband Mick, 28, decided to set up her own organisation, which is appealing for volunteers who would be willing to help bake the cakes.

Artist John Mayes hands Thetford Mayor Stuart Wright his painting of a Burrells showman's traction engine. ANL-140430-114958001 Artist gives Thetford Town Council painting of its living history Thetford artist John Mayes had been wondering what to do with his painting of a Burrell showman’s traction engine until someone suggested presenting it to the Town Council.
At their meeting on 29th April Thetford Town Council voted unanimously to accept his offer after hearing the story behind it.

John, 83, had won the Spec’s Factory Sponsor’s Choice Artist award at Royal Norfolk Show in 2009 so was commissioned to paint something for the show’s 2010 programme cover.

“Thetford doesn’t often get represented there so I did this,” he said. “It’s called ‘A Thetford Legacy’.”

But John, who had relatives at Burrells’ Thetford factory, had a stroke and was unable to finish the painting in time.

He pointed out that the council has pictures of members of the Burrell family in its King’s Street offices but not of Burrell products.

“Here’s a great piece of heavy engineering,” he said. “It’s a piece of history — its’s living history. It’s yours if you want it.”

Mayor Stuart Wright accepted the painting on behalf of the council.

Ben Brooks in the air as he skateboards at the mobile skate park set up in Thetford's Market Place in 2005. Skate Park News Long-awaited plans entered for £100,000 Thetford Skate Park
The site for a long-awaited skate park has finally been revealed after long-awaited plans were entered.

Young people in Thetford have been waiting for a new site for a proposed facility for more than 18 months after previous plans to build one behind Breckland Leisure Centre were scrapped in 2012.

Thetford Town Council has now entered a revised planning application to Breckland Council showing that the park will be located next to Thetford Academy with access from Joe Blunt’s Lane.

The original design, which many young people were fully involved in, will transfer to the new site.

Thetford Town Council’s Amenities Chair Corinne Fulford said: “The Amenities Committee has worked long and hard to ensure this project is delivered and works for as many people as possible.

“Thetford’s youth has waited a very long time for this and we look forward to working with them and their parents on the skate park’s management plan.”

Funding of £100,000 was ringfenced for the project by Moving Thetford Forward.

A decision on the planning application will be expected by February if it is validated by Breckland’s planning department.

Thetford Remembers 1914 1918 Thetford Remembers 1914 1918 War is Announced:
The story of how Thetford learned of the beginning of the First World War was brought to life on Monday night at a dramatic community event.

Performers from the Thetford Players and Thetford Methodist Players turned back time exactly 100 years to relive the moment the town was told that war had been declared on Germany.

Backed by the Guildhall, the voice of Mike Wabe, town crier, boomed over the market square to inform people that hostilities had begun.

The crowd of more than 200 watched on as actors recreated the recruitment of Thetfordian troops and their being waved off to war.

The crowd then sang along to It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, backed by the Bridgham and Harling band.

The event was organised over the last year by Thetford Christians Together and Thetford Town Council.

Rachel Woods, who organised the annual event, said she welcomed 240 visitors to her garden alone, while in total 33 homes within the town took part.

Money was also being raised for the charity St Nicholas Hospice Care, which provides practical, medical and spiritual support to families living with an illness that is life threatening.

Mrs Woods said the gardens on show ranged from courtyard gardens to patios and others with big stretches of lawn, boasting roses and lavender in full bloom among other plants.

One house had a rhinoceros statue on the lawn, while another homeowner held a Guess the Weight of the Cake competition.

Kings House in King Street and Boscombe House and meditative gardens in Castle Lane were among places that joined in the open gardens.

Mrs Woods said: “It has been brilliant. We have sold out of programmes. We have done the best we have ever done.”

Thetford Garden Centre New Nature Trail New Thetford Nature Trail Thetford Garden Centre, with the help of Treelink Landcare, have been working hard over these past few months to create a wonderful nature trail at the back of the Garden Centre.
Phase one involved cutting back all the trees and hedging plus the removal of any diseased or dead specimens. The tree canopy was lifted by two meters to allow light to the woodland floor and all branches that were removed were either stacked to help wildlife thrive or chipped to create a better pathway for walkers. Treelink even used their chainsaw skill and recycled the old stumps into natural benches to create peaceful seating areas beside the river.

Shane Hinkley, Business Development Manager said “now that we have finished the first phase we can start organising the next phase which will see the planting of more native species and the improvement of wildlife habitats. We have received a great response from some of our key suppliers who would like to get involved and we will also be reaching out to the local community who may like to be part of this exciting project in some way. We’ve already received positive feedback from people who have enjoyed the trail and that is really encouraging for us.

Our next stage will be to invite local schools to come along and help us with the planting of Daffodils, Snowdrops, Bluebells, Scotch Pines and other native Species of trees and hedging; We will also be asking them to help decide where to place bird and bat boxes along the trail.”

The Nature Trail will be an ongoing project which can be enjoyed, free of charge, all year round and is hoped to be a great inspiration to children to make them more aware of the local flora and fauna.

If you would like to know more or even be involved in this project please contact Shane Hinkley on 01842 763267 or email marketing@thetfordgardencentre.co.uk

D-day for a transformational 25-year project which developers say will change the face of Thetford, creating homes, jobs, schools and community spaces, is approaching.

The Thetford Sustainable Urban Extension plan (SUE) promises to bring 5,000 homes, 19.5 hectares of employment land, three new schools, playing fields, upgraded access and a host of other features over the next quarter of a century.

If delivered, the project would also see the developers pay nearly £157m in Section 106 contributions to local authorities.

Thetford Remembers 1914 1918 Thetford Remembers 1914 1918 War is Announced: The story of how Thetford learned of the beginning of the First World War was brought to life on Monday night at a dramatic community event.

    • Thetford charity supplies first birthday cake for deprived children

    • New Thetford Nature Trail

Thetford Sustainable Urban Extension Have Your Say Members of the public can attend a special meeting of Breckland Council’s planning committee at the Carnegie Rooms in Thetford on Friday 4th April.
An outline planning application from the Kilverstone Estate, The Crown Estate and Pigeon Limited will go under the microscope at a special meeting of Breckland Council’s planning committee at the Carnegie Rooms in Thetford on Friday 4th April and members of the public are welcome to attend and listen to the debate.

The council is eager for the public to make their voices heard for an application which is thought to be the largest in its 40 year history.

    • Thetford Forest Living Symphonies

Angles Way New Angles Way Signage Thetford Town Council agrees to new Angles Way signage

The Angles Way is a 93 mile long distance trail that crosses the Norfolk and Suffolk borders and is one of a network that act as economic drivers for both counties' tourism and leisure industries. That is they provide mainly off road access for walkers, cyclists and equestrians to explore the natural and built heritage across Norfolk and Suffolk. This new signage will direct travellers from both the train station and bus station and those travelling through Thetford to the start point of the trail (close to Nuns Bridges).
